A court has granted bail to Md Rakib Hossain, an accused in a case filed over the death of schoolteacher Ronjila Parvin, who fell from a moving auto-rickshaw after a mugger snatched her bag in front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Judge Ayesha Akter Mousumi of the Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court-2 in Dhaka granted him bail on a bond of Tk5,000 following a hearing on Sunday afternoon.

Defence lawyer Md Mehdi Hasan Majumdar said the court granted Rakib bail until the submission of the police report in the case. As there are no other cases against him, there is no legal barrier to his release from jail, he added.

Rakib was the owner of the motorcycle that was initially seized following the incident. The motorcycle was not used in the snatching, he claimed.

The lawyer said the vehicle was in a garage at the time of the incident, and CCTV footage is available to support that claim. The vehicle allegedly used in the snatching was later recovered. The defence also alleged that Rakib had been implicated in the case with the intention of harassing him.
