Main accused in IU teacher murder arrested

The prime suspect in the brutal murder of Asma Sadia Runa, assistant professor and head of the Social Welfare Department at Islamic University, has been arrested.

The suspect, Fazlur Rahman, an employee in the university’s administrative department, is accused of fatally stabbing Runa.

According to Abdullah Al Mamun, the investigating officer, Fazlur Rahman was apprehended on Friday afternoon.

He is currently undergoing treatment at the ICU of Kushtia Sadar Hospital after sustaining serious injuries.

Police are monitoring him at the hospital, and doctors have confirmed that his condition is now stable.

During his treatment, Fazlur reportedly confessed to the crime in a written statement to the authorities.

“We have initiated the investigation after a murder case was filed. The main accused, Fazlur Rahman, has been arrested, and efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects,” said Abdullah Al Mamun.

He further explained that, since two of the accused are university teachers, the investigation will continue to ensure all necessary measures are taken.

Earlier, on Thursday morning, Runa’s husband, Imtiaz Sultan, filed a murder case with the Islamic University Police Station.

The case named Fazlur Rahman, along with three others -former Deputy Registrar Bishwajit Kumar Biswas, Assistant Professor Shyam Sundar Sarker, and Assistant Professor Habibur Rahman.

The charges were filed under sections 302 and 109 of the Penal Code, relating to murder and criminal conspiracy.

The investigation continues as authorities work to bring the remaining suspects to justice.
