On 16 February last year, actress Mahiya Mahi took to Facebook with a video announcement declaring that she was ending her marriage to businessman and politician Rakib Sarkar.
At the time, she said, “When things don’t work despite trying, it’s better to remain friends. Rakib is a very caring father to our son Farish; that’s what matters most to me.”
Even then, she spoke fondly of her husband, adding, “Rakib is a kind-hearted, generous person, but we simply have different patterns in life.”
Since that announcement a year and a half ago, the two had not been seen together publicly, until recently. Mahi focused on her acting projects and raising their son Farish, while Rakib remained busy with his political and business commitments.
Now, speaking from the US, Mahi has made a surprising revelation: the couple never actually divorced. And to everyone’s surprise, Mahi announced her remarriage to Rakib Sarkar through a Facebook life event on Saturday.
“I said it out of anger,” she explained to media regarding her previous decision. “In reality, our divorce didn’t happen. We’re still in touch.”
However, Rakib’s current whereabouts remain unclear. Mahi recently shared an old photo of them on social media to clear up what she called “misunderstandings.”
“The picture was taken in India. Many people have seen on Wikipedia that I’m listed as divorced, so I posted it to clarify things. Our passports still say ‘married’ and Rakib Sarkar is listed as my husband,” she said.
Mahi’s latest remarks have caused confusion among fans and close acquaintances alike. Some have speculated that her statement may be linked to her time in the US, suggesting she might be making the claim to support a citizenship application under a special quota.
Amid the discussions, Jaaz Multimedia has announced a new film starring Mahi, titled ‘Ontorjami’ (The Inner Self), marking her official return to acting.
This development comes as a surprise, given that during her parliamentary campaign, Mahi had stated she would no longer work in films. Yet, it seems she is once again ready to face the camera.
Mahiya Mahi was previously married to Sylhet-based businessman Parvez Mahmood Opu in 2016. Their marriage ended in 2021 and later that same year on 13 September, she married Rakib Sarkar.
