A lioness at the National Zoo in Mirpur briefly escaped from her enclosure on Friday afternoon, roaming the zoo for nearly an hour before being safely returned.
The lioness, named Daisy, slipped out of her cage around 4:45pm, zoo director Dr Rafiqul Islam Talukdar said.
“She stayed in a corner near her enclosure, and our staff surrounded her to ensure safety,” he added. Daisy was guided back into her main cage by 7:20pm.
The zoo, which currently houses five lions, temporarily cleared visitors from the premises after the escape, preventing any accidents or injuries.
A zoo source revealed that the cage lock had not been properly secured, providing the opportunity for Daisy to leave her enclosure. The authorities have announced the formation of a committee to investigate the incident and determine whether negligence played a role.
No staff or visitors were harmed during the two-hour escapade.
