Bangladesh will face Malaysia in the Asian Games cricket quarter-final after Malaysia topped Group B following a rain-affected final group match.
Malaysia were scheduled to play Oman in Nishin, but persistent rain prevented the toss and the match was eventually abandoned. The points were shared, giving Malaysia three points from two matches and first place in the group.
Hong Kong finished second with two points and will face Pakistan in the quarter-final. Oman, with one point, were eliminated from the competition.
Bangladesh had already secured a direct place in the last eight based on their ICC ranking. With Malaysia finishing top of Group B, Litton Das and his team will now meet them for a place in the semi-finals.
The other quarter-final matches have also been confirmed. Nepal and Afghanistan progressed from Group A, while Japan were eliminated after their match against Nepal was washed out.
Nepal will face Sri Lanka, while Afghanistan will take on India. Pakistan will meet Hong Kong in the other quarter-final.
The last-eight matches begin on Monday. Pakistan and Hong Kong will play at 6am Bangladesh time, followed by India’s meeting with Afghanistan at 11am. Nepal and Sri Lanka will face each other at 6am on Tuesday, before Bangladesh take on Malaysia at 11am.
Bangladesh and Malaysia have met only once in international cricket. Their previous meeting came in the 2023 Asian Games quarter-final in China, where Bangladesh secured a two-run victory to reach the semi-finals.
Malaysia have also recently played a series in Bangladesh against the Bangladesh High Performance team.
Bangladesh will now look to repeat their 2023 result and book their place in the Asian Games semi-finals.
