Virat Kohli has confirmed that the 2027 ODI World Cup will be his final appearance at the tournament, giving India another major target to chase with the veteran batter still active in the 50-over format.
Kohli stepped away from Test and T20I cricket earlier this year but has continued playing ODIs. His decision to remain in the format has largely been linked to his desire to feature in another World Cup.
The 37-year-old is now preparing for his fifth World Cup. He made his tournament debut in 2011 and was part of India’s title-winning campaign on home soil under MS Dhoni. However, he has not lifted the trophy since becoming one of the leading names in world cricket.
Speaking to JioStar on Saturday, Kohli said the 2027 tournament represents his final opportunity to win the World Cup with India.
“For me, this is my last World Cup playing for India. That is my motivation and to give everything I have on the field. And obviously, the goal is to win the World Cup and I am fully prepared to do whatever is needed for that,” Kohli said.
The 2027 World Cup will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Kohli expects the tournament to present a different challenge because it will be played away from India.
He also highlighted the demands of the 50-over format, describing the intensity of an ODI World Cup as unmatched by other competitions.
Kohli is not the only former India captain targeting another World Cup appearance. Rohit Sharma has also continued with ODIs after retiring from Test and T20I cricket.
“I never thought that my job was done. As long as I am playing, I will always look forward to something. I am now eagerly waiting for the World Cup,” Rohit said.
Both Kohli and Rohit have been included in India’s squad for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies. The opening match will be played in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.
