Bangladesh have revived their Asian Games men’s hockey campaign with back-to-back victories, setting up a crucial meeting with India in their final Pool A match.
After losing their first two games against South Korea and hosts Japan, Bangladesh have responded strongly. They followed a 5-1 victory over Sri Lanka with another convincing result, beating Indonesia 3-1 at Kawasaki Juko Stadium in Japan on Saturday.
Amirul Islam again proved decisive. The forward opened the scoring in the 11th minute before adding his second shortly after the restart to give Bangladesh a firm grip on the contest.
Indonesia struggled to cope with Bangladesh’s pressure as the game progressed. Bangladesh maintained their 1-0 advantage through the second quarter before increasing the tempo after half-time.
Amirul struck again in the 31st minute, completing his second successive brace. Russell Mahmud Jimmy then extended the lead five minutes later, putting Bangladesh 3-0 ahead.
Indonesia managed a late response in the final quarter when Auwlia Al Ard converted a penalty corner. The goal, however, did little to alter the outcome as Bangladesh comfortably protected their two-goal advantage.
The result gives Bangladesh six points from four matches and keeps their hopes of progressing from the group alive. India sit at the top of Pool A with nine points from three wins.
Bangladesh’s campaign began with a heavy 5-0 defeat against South Korea before Japan handed them another setback, winning 6-1. The two successive victories have since changed the picture.
Their final group match now brings the toughest challenge. Bangladesh will meet unbeaten India on Monday, with the result potentially determining whether they can make it through to the next stage.
