Tsutomu Shibayama, the veteran animation director best known for his foundational work on the Doraemon franchise, has passed away at the age of 84.

His death, which occurred on March 6 following a battle with lung cancer, was confirmed in an official statement by Ajia-do Animation Works, the studio he co-founded.

Born in Tokyo in 1941, Shibayama entered the animation industry in the early 1960s and emerged as one of its most enduring creative forces.

He is widely credited as a central figure in Japanese animation, particularly for his pivotal role in shaping the 1979 Doraemon television series.

As the chief director of the series, he was instrumental in defining the tone and storytelling style that propelled the character to global recognition.

His commitment to the franchise spanned more than two decades, during which he helmed 22 feature films between the early 1980s and 2004.

Beyond his work on Doraemon, Shibayama’s extensive portfolio included contributions to other notable anime titles such as Chibi Maruko-chan, Nintama Rantaro, and Ranma ½.

In recognition of his distinguished career, Shibayama received numerous honours, most notably a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival in 2018. He was also a co-founder of Ajia-do Animation Works, established in 1978.

Fans across the globe have expressed their grief, with many taking to social media to thank him for “making our childhood awesome.”

Tributes highlighted his deep personal affection for his work, with one admirer noting that his drawings of himself and his crew “shooting” scenes with Doraemon and friends served as a testament to his love for the characters.

His passing comes ahead of the anticipated release of an artbook focused on his layout works, which was announced by Animestyle last year and is reportedly nearing completion.
