Singer Sadia Liza has performed three songs by legendary Bangladeshi mystic poet and lyricist Durbin Shah, popularly known as the “Ocean of Knowledge”.
Liza sang Tui Jodi Hoiti Golar Mala, Amar Ontoray and Bondhu Aiyo Amar Bari on Bangladesh Television’s regular music programme The Music Legends.
Durbin Shah was born in Chhatak, Sunamganj, on 2 November 1920 and died on 15 February 1977 at the age of 56.
His father, Safat Ali Shah, was a Sufi practitioner, while his mother, Hasina Banu, was a spiritual guide.
Growing up in a family immersed in spiritual practice and music, he went on to become an influential figure in Bangla folk music.
His songs explore Sufism and mysticism alongside a wide range of themes and musical traditions, including Baul, separation, regional folk music, devotional songs and patriotic music.
In 1967, Durbin Shah travelled to England at the invitation of expatriate Bengalis, accompanied by fellow Baul mystic Shah Abdul Karim.
Impressed by his lyrics and melodies, music enthusiasts there gave him the title “Ocean of Knowledge”.
Speaking about her experience, Liza said she had performed in various programmes on BTV before, but singing Durbin Shah’s songs on The Music Legends was particularly meaningful.
“I was delighted to have the opportunity to perform several songs by the respected Durbin Shah of Sunamganj. All three songs are deeply moving and widely loved. I thank BTV for giving me this opportunity,” she said.
Liza has also recorded a new song for Bangladesh Betar, where she is a listed folk singer. Written by Syed Shafiul Azam and composed by Babu Sarkar, the song has been recorded for broadcast.
The singer is scheduled to travel abroad for four days from 22 October to perform at a stage programme.
Liza hails from Daukandi village in Durgapur, Rajshahi. Her parents are Shahor Ali and Masura Begum.
