Oscar-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh will help complete the final weeks of filming on The Batman Part II while director Matt Reeves takes a temporary break to attend to an ongoing family matter.
Variety confirmed the development, reporting that Soderbergh approached Reeves to offer his help, with the full backing of DC Studios. A studio representative said the two filmmakers would work closely with the cast and crew to preserve Reeves’ vision for the highly anticipated sequel.
Soderbergh praised Reeves’ work on the first The Batman, describing it as “intentional, specific and rigorously coherent”. He said his aim was to create footage that would blend seamlessly with the scenes already filmed, allowing Reeves to complete the film as intended.
Reeves also clarified on X that he was not leaving the project. He will remain involved in the production but will stay away from the set as principal photography reaches its final weeks.
Warner Bros. and DC Studios announced a temporary production pause in early October as Reeves stepped away to deal with the family matter. At the time, a studio representative said Reeves had the studios’ full support and that they looked forward to resuming work soon.
Soderbergh is known for directing acclaimed films including Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Sex, Lies, and Videotape and Ocean’s Eleven. His recent releases include The Christophers, Black Bag, Presence and John Lennon: The Last Interview.
The sequel has faced several release delays since its announcement at CinemaCon in 2022. Warner Bros. initially scheduled it for 2 October 2026, then moved it to 1 October 2027. The studio later pushed the release to February 2028. Reeves’ first The Batman reached cinemas in March 2022.
Robert Pattinson will return as the Caped Crusader in The Batman Part II. The cast also includes Scarlett Johansson, Colin Farrell, Sebastian Stan, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright.
