Law enforcement officials detained a BNP leader for violating the electoral code of conduct by seeking votes inside a polling centre in Daulatpur of Kushtia-1 on Thursday morning.
The incident took place around 9:30am at the Gacherdiar Govt Primary School polling centre under Hogalbaria Union.
The detainee, Amjad Hossain, is the president of the local BNP unit.
According to mobile court sources, Amjad entered the polling centre and directly asked voters for their support, which constitutes a clear violation of election rules.
On receiving the information, members of the law enforcement agencies immediately detained him from the centre.
Executive Magistrate Abu Salem Md Nasim, who was in charge of the centre, said “Amjad was handed over to a judicial magistrate for conducting campaign activities inside the polling station in breach of election law.”
Upazila Returning Officer and UNO Anindya Guha said “BNP leader remains in judicial custody and legal proceedings are under way.”
The administration confirmed that the situation at the polling centre is now calm and normal.
