Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has appealed to the people of the country to give the government time to stabilise the economy and bring commodity prices under control.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after offering Eid-ul-Adha prayers at his residence in Uttar Kattali of Chattogram city on Thursday morning.
The minister said the government inherited a fragile economy and that restoring stability would take time.
“We appeal to the people of the country to give us some time. Bringing a fragile economy back to the right place and moving forward requires time. As an elected government, we are accountable to the people. We are working towards building a welfare state, InshaAllah,” he said.
Referring to the market situation during Eid-ul-Adha, the minister claimed that prices of essential commodities did not rise this year as they usually do during the festival season.
“Traditionally, prices increase during this Eid, but this time prices have decreased instead. We are trying to keep commodity prices under control and hope they will gradually come down further,” he said.
Amir Khosru also said the benefits of economic growth must reach ordinary people. “If commodity prices remain beyond the purchasing power of common people, they will be deprived of the benefits of the economy,” he added.
The minister also mentioned the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, saying global instability has added pressure to the economy.
“We inherited a fragile economy from previous governments. At the same time, there is a war going on in the Middle East. Despite these challenges, we have to bring the economy back on track. We will move towards prosperity, InshaAllah,” he said.
Speaking about the significance of Eid-ul-Adha, the minister said the festival is not only about sacrificing animals but also about embracing the spirit of sacrifice.
