Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal on Tuesday said former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia made an undeniable contribution to establishing an independent judiciary and advancing parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh.
He said the country’s current parliamentary system of government was a direct outcome of her contribution.
The Attorney General made the remarks after paying respects at the graves of former president Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia along with newly appointed law officers.
He said the identities of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia were no longer limited to any particular political party.
Highlighting their roles, Ruhul Quddus Kazal said Ziaur Rahman established good governance, introduced multi-party democracy and ensured the free flow of information through the media.
He said Khaleda Zia restored democracy in the country through a nine-year movement against autocracy.
The attorney general said his office would be guided by the principles of democracy, human rights and justice. He said one of the key responsibilities of the Attorney General’s office was to ensure that ordinary and oppressed people received justice from the courts.
He urged newly appointed law officers to prove their competence through honesty, dedication and professionalism. The government appointed 86 Deputy Attorneys General and 179 Assistant Attorneys General on 30 July.
The attorney general also urged media professionals to remain cautious and ensure that misinformation or incomplete information does not hinder the country’s progress.
