Law Adviser Asif Nazrul on Friday said former prime minister Khaleda Zia was wrongfully convicted through what he described as the most disgraceful and farcical trial in Bangladesh’s judicial history, referring to the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
He made the remarks while speaking at a condolence meeting held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament Building, where he termed the verdict against Khaleda Zia a “sham judgment” that has permanently tarnished the country’s justice system.
Recalling an episode from the trial, Asif Nazrul said a defence lawyer had once asked Khaleda Zia whether she had embezzled orphanage funds. “Shocked and hurt, she repeated the question – Did I misappropriate orphan money? That repetition was treated as her statement and used as grounds for conviction,” he said.
The adviser said it could be stated with certainty that there had been no judicial proceeding more disgraceful than that.
He noted that there was a period when very few people dared to speak publicly in support of Khaleda Zia or protest the injustice done to her.
While searching for statements condemning the verdict, he said only four individuals, both at home and abroad, were willing to issue public protests at the time.
At that time, it was nearly impossible to stand beside Khaleda Zia, he said, noting that the political landscape has since changed significantly.
Asif Nazrul further said Khaleda Zia has secured a lasting place in the hearts of the people, while deposed former prime minister Sheikh Hasina has been relegated to public rejection.
“Khaleda Zia is no longer with us. The real question now is what kind of Bangladesh lies ahead,” he said. “If the country is to prosper, it must be guided by the vision Khaleda Zia held for it. Upholding her ideals is essential to building a better Bangladesh.”
Expressing gratitude to participants of the July uprising, the law adviser said the movement has restored people’s ability to speak freely, whether to express support or dissent, without fear.
BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman, along with members of his family, attended the programme. Senior BNP leaders, including members of the party’s Standing Committee, were also present.
The condolence meeting was attended by prominent figures from the media, business community, and various professional groups, who paid tribute to Khaleda Zia and reflected on her political legacy.
