Police have arrested Shahanaz Akhter, acting chairperson of the Barpara Union Parishad (UP) in Daudkandi upazila, in connection with case filed over murder during July uprising last year.
She was detained from her residence in the Barpara area on Tuesday, confirmed Md Junaid Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Daudkandi Model Police Station.
According to police and local sources, the arrest is linked to a fatal incident that occurred on August 5 last year during an anti-discrimination student protest in the Gouripur Bazaar area of Daudkandi. Sultan Mia, a local resident, was killed during the unrest.
Nearly 11 months after the incident, Sultan Mia’s wife, Rehena Begum, filed a murder case on June 26, naming 33 individuals as accused. Shahanaz Akhter was among those listed in the complaint.
“Since she is an accused in a murder case, we arrested her as per legal procedures,” said OC Junaid Chowdhury. “She has been sent to jail through the Cumilla court.”
Shahinaz had been serving as the acting chairperson of Barpara Union at the time of her arrest.
