The National Consensus Commission has decided to defer the signing of the July Charter by two days, now scheduled for 17 October.
Earlier, on 9 October, the commission had announced in a press release that the signing would take place on 15 October.
Monir Haider, special assistant to the chief adviser on building consensus, told TIMES of Bangladesh that the signing ceremony was postponed to ensure greater participation from the public.
“This event will be a historic moment. Since Friday is a public holiday, it will allow people to more easily attend this significant occasion,” he said.
According to sources from the commission, the date for the signing ceremony has been changed due to some remaining preparatory work.
The commission is currently finalising some key processes for the implementation of the charter. Once these processes are finalised, the political parties will be formally notified. Informal discussions will also be held with the parties on these matters.
The commission has stated that additional time has been taken until next Friday to complete these tasks. However, it has clarified that no further formal meetings will be held with political parties. Only informal discussions will continue.
