BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the signing of July Charter has introduced a new chapter in the history of Bangladesh’s politics.
He made the remarks while talking to reporters after signing the charter at a ceremony at the South Plaza of Parliament on Friday afternoon.
Fakhrul said the commissions formed by the interim government have worked tirelessly for nearly eight months to reach this landmark agreement.
“I express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Muhammad Yunus, all political parties, the National Consensus Commission, and the Reform Commission for their relentless work to make this possible,” he added.
Speaking on the occasion, BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has termed the signing of the charter a “historic day” for the nation.
“This day will remain memorable as long as Bangladesh’s history exists. The signing of July Charter marks the beginning of fulfilling the aspirations of our people,” he said.
“No organ of the state will be able to exert authority over another. All institutions will function within constitutional boundaries to build an effective democratic state. We look forward to that day,” he added.
Salahuddin also mentioned that almost all political parties have signed the charter. “Those who haven’t signed yet – we hope they will do in the future. The opportunity remains open,” he said.
“Some are trying to misinterpret the Election Commission’s role as merely conducting elections. That’s not true – the Constitution clearly defines how elections should be held. There’s no scope for confusion,” he stated.
