Japan moved closer to the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage with a commanding 4-0 win over Tunisia in Monterrey on Sunday.

The victory lifted Japan to four points from two matches in Group F. Tunisia, meanwhile, became the latest team to exit the tournament after suffering a second straight defeat.

Japan made a dream start. Daichi Kamada opened the scoring in the fourth minute after connecting with a cross from Keito Nakamura. The early goal set the tone as Japan controlled possession and pushed Tunisia back for much of the first half.

The Asian side nearly doubled their lead soon after. A scramble from a corner ended with the ball heading toward the goal. Japanese players celebrated, but goal line technology showed the ball had not fully crossed the line.

Japan did not have to wait long for another goal. Ayase Ueda found space outside the box in the 33rd minute and fired a superb shot into the net to make it 2-0.

Tunisia struggled to respond. Their defence left too many gaps and Japan continued to create chances with quick passing and smart movement.

The third goal arrived in the 69th minute. Junya Ito finished off a flowing attack to put Japan firmly in control of the contest.

Ueda then added his second goal late in the match. The striker sent a looping header over the goalkeeper and defenders to complete the scoring and cap an impressive performance.

Japan’s four goals set a new World Cup record for an Asian side. No team from Asia had scored four times in a World Cup match before.

Keito Nakamura once again played a key role. The winger provided an assist and caused problems for Tunisia throughout the game.

Japan now sit level on points with the Netherlands at the top of Group F. Hajime Moriyasu’s side will face Sweden in their final group match as they look to secure a place in the round of 32.

For Tunisia, the defeat ended their World Cup hopes. New coach Herve Renard could not inspire a turnaround after taking charge following the opening match. Tunisia have lost both of their group games and are out of the competition.
