There is a particular kind of freedom that comes with travelling when you are young. It is noisy, occasionally uncomfortable and entirely unforgettable. You eat things you cannot pronounce, sleep in rooms full of strangers who become friends by morning and return home with stories that stay with you far longer than souvenirs ever could.
For many Bangladeshis, however, the dream of seeing the world can feel weighed down by obstacles: complicated visa requirements, unfavourable exchange rates and the nagging suspicion that travel is simply too expensive. The good news is that it does not have to be. These eight destinations are affordable, accessible and rich in experiences, making them ideal for curious travellers with limited budgets.
Vietnam
From the bustling streets of Hanoi to the sun-drenched beaches of Phu Quoc, Vietnam is one of Asia’s great budget destinations. Street food meals can cost less than Tk 250, hostel beds start from around Tk 650 a night and a daily budget of Tk 3,500 is usually enough to travel comfortably.
The country’s open bus network makes travelling from north to south remarkably affordable, while overnight sleeper buses can save both time and accommodation costs. An e-visa can be obtained online and is typically processed within three to five working days.
Uzbekistan
This is the wildcard on the list: a destination few people talk about but one that deserves far more attention. The ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva are stunning, UNESCO-listed and refreshingly free from overtourism.
Around Tk 4,500 a day will comfortably cover guesthouses, local meals and train journeys between cities. Visa arrangements require advance planning, as Bangladeshi applicants must apply through the Uzbekistan Embassy in New Delhi.
Malaysia
For many young Bangladeshis, Malaysia provides the first stamp in a passport, and with good reason. Just a three-and-a-half-hour flight from Dhaka, it offers modern skylines, renowned street food and tropical beaches in a single trip.
From the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur to the food culture of Penang and the shores of Langkawi, there is remarkable variety within easy reach. Budget travellers can expect daily expenses of around Tk 3,000. The e-visa process is straightforward and usually takes two to three working days.
Kazakhstan
Vast steppes, snow-capped mountains and futuristic cityscapes make Kazakhstan one of Central Asia’s most surprising destinations. Astana looks as though it belongs in a science-fiction film, while the landscapes beyond the capital remain largely untouched by mass tourism.
A daily budget of around Tk 4,000 is generally sufficient, and the e-visa process can be completed from home. Expect plenty of curious conversations when fellow travellers discover where you have been.
Laos
If Vietnam is the energetic older sibling, Laos is the quieter and more reflective one. Golden temples, the slow-moving Mekong River, saffron-robed monks at sunrise and an unhurried pace of life create an atmosphere that encourages visitors to slow down.
Daily expenses average around Tk 2,500. While Bangladeshi passport holders are not eligible for a visa on arrival, an e-visa can usually be processed online within three working days.
Nepal
Nepal offers more than a holiday. It offers perspective. Whether trekking towards Everest Base Camp, wandering through the historic courtyards of Kathmandu or watching clouds drift across the lakes of Pokhara, the country has a remarkable ability to make everyday worries seem smaller.
Daily expenses can be as low as Tk 2,000, and Bangladeshi passport holders receive a visa on arrival, making Nepal one of the easiest destinations on this list to visit at short notice.
Sri Lanka
Ancient ruins, tea-covered hills, surf beaches, flavourful cuisine and famously warm hospitality all coexist within one compact island. Sri Lanka is small enough to explore thoroughly in a matter of days and affordable enough to do so without straining your finances.
Budget travellers can manage comfortably on around Tk 3,000 a day. Entry requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation, which can be obtained online before departure.
Cambodia
Few countries leave such a lasting emotional impression. The grandeur of Angkor Wat at sunrise, the difficult history of Phnom Penh and the laid-back beaches of Koh Rong offer strikingly different experiences within a single journey. Cambodia is both moving and affordable, with daily expenses of around Tk 3,000. Bangladeshi passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival.
Before packing your backpack, a note of realism. Budget travel is not always glamorous. Hostels mean shared rooms and limited privacy. Eating locally often means skipping fine dining. Public transport can be crowded, slow and occasionally confusing.
Yet these are rarely the drawbacks people remember. They are often the experiences that define the journey. The conversation in a shared dormitory, the roadside meal that becomes your favourite memory and the overcrowded bus that leads to a spectacular destination are all part of the adventure.
Travel, after all, is not about comfort. It is about discovery. So, the only question left is this: where will you go first?
