A Dhaka court has placed Kazi Mamunur Rashid, secretary general of the Raushan Ershad faction of the Jatiya Party (JaPa), on six-day remand in a case over allegedly conspiring with a foreign intelligence agency to overthrow the interim government.
On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed this order after the investigating officer of the case applied for a 10-day remand. Earlier, on Sunday, 28 September, he was arrested in front of Hotel Westin by the DB police.
According to the remand plea, Kazi Mamunur Rashid was accused of conspiring with Bangladeshi-origin American citizen Enayet Karim Chowdhury secretly to overthrow the government.
Earlier, on 17 September, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court granted a five-day remand to the main accused in the case, Enayet Karim Chowdhury (55), and his main accomplice Golam Mostafa Azad (49).
On 15 September, the court granted a two-day remand to Enayet Karim in the same case. On 13 September, he was arrested by police for moving suspiciously on Minto Road in the capital.
According to the case statement, Enayet Karim was seen moving suspiciously in a Prado car on Minto Road, Dhaka, on 13 September. Later, he was taken into police custody.
During interrogation, he claimed to be an agent of a foreign intelligence agency, having arrived in Bangladesh on 6 September from New York to overthrow the interim government of Bangladesh.
