Rabiul Bashar, the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for the Satkhira-3 (Kaliganj-Ashashuni) constituency, has been served with a show-cause notice for violating the electoral code of conduct.
The action was taken by the office of the Assistant Returning Officer following allegations regarding the use of prohibited promotional materials and posters across various areas of the constituency.
Tania Akter, the Kaliganj upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and assistant returning officer, confirmed the development.
According to sources from the Assistant Returning Officer’s office, posters featuring Bashar’s ‘scales’ (daripalla) symbol were displayed on main roads and various smaller streets across 12 unions in Kaliganj and Ashashuni.
This act is considered a clear violation of the established election code of conduct.
The notice directed Bashar to immediately remove all illegal promotional materials. Additionally, Bashar has been instructed to appear in person by 25 January to provide a written explanation as to why legal action should not be initiated against him for breach of regulations.
UNO Tania Akter stated that the candidate’s actions contravene Rules 7(a) and 18 of the electoral code of conduct. She noted that such activities undermine the environment for a fair and neutral election and are punishable offences under the law.
She further emphasised that the administration would maintain a strict stance against any violations to ensure a free electoral environment.
