OpenAI will not go public this year or in 2026, Chief Executive Sam Altman has confirmed, citing concerns over artificial intelligence safety.
In an interview with Fortune business magazine on Friday, published on Saturday, Altman said an initial public offering (IPO) would be an “ill-advised moment” at present given developments related to AI safety. He added that the organisation was not under pressure to list, reports AFP.
Asked whether an IPO was ruled out for 2026, Altman confirmed that OpenAI would not make its stock market debut that year either, saying the company had “got a lot of stuff to do”.
OpenAI has not formally announced a target date for going public, but it has been competing with rival Anthropic to become a publicly traded company.
Both companies have confidentially filed IPO documents with US regulators and are seeking public listings at market valuations approaching $1 trillion.
