Bangladesh Bank Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman has revealed that Islami Bank was provided with Tk13,000 crore in liquidity support over the past four months. Notably, no other bank has required new liquidity assistance during this period since the current government assumed office.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday following the announcement of the monetary policy for the first half (July-December) of the 2026-27 fiscal year, the governor urged the public to exercise patience and refrain from speculation regarding the bank.
He emphasised that the central bank is operating strictly in accordance with the law and will not take any decisions outside of legal frameworks.
Addressing the various analyses and rumours circulating on social media and other platforms, the governor said, “I would request everyone, please have a little patience. This is a bank. It is governed by the Bank Company Act. We will not do anything outside the law.”
He further explained that the central bank is reluctant to make extensive public comments at this stage because many matters are currently subject to legal processes.
“I do not want to talk too much. Give it some time. We are rectifying the issues that fell outside the Bank Company Act. I believe these will be resolved very soon,” the governor added.
During the press conference, questions were raised regarding the appointment of Islami Bank’s chairman, the restructuring of the Board of Directors, and the bank’s management. In response, the governor maintained that all decisions are being processed through established legal and institutional channels.
He also reaffirmed that Bangladesh Bank’s efforts to establish good governance, reduce defaulted loans, and identify irregularities through special audits will continue. These measures are expected to further bolster the stability of the banking sector.
