Islami Andolan Bangladesh has expressed strong opposition to the Election Commission’s (EC) restrictions on religious gatherings (waz-mahfils), calling it an interference with people’s religious freedom.
Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman, joint secretary-general and spokesperson of Islami Andolan, said in a statement that waz-mahfils have become an integral part of Bangladesh’s cultural and religious traditions.
“During winter, almost every village hosts such gatherings, many of which follow long-standing traditions. Imposing restrictions on these events ahead of elections interferes with religious freedom and could create negative public sentiment towards the government and the EC,” he said.
He emphasised that the majority of religious speakers maintain an apolitical stance, focusing on spiritual and moral guidance.
Even those with political affiliations generally avoid political discussions during sermons. “Restricting waz-mahfils under the pretext of elections is unjustified,” he added.
Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman also pointed out that religious leaders frequently address social issues such as corruption, bribery, usury, oppression, and injustice.
“If such guidance is treated as political speech, it raises serious concerns about the EC’s judgment. We urge the commission to lift these restrictions,” he said.
