Secretary General of Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Maulana Yunus Ahmad, on Tuesday said in a statement that attempts are being made by certain vested interests to create unrest in the country by targeting people’s religious sentiments.
“The people of Bangladesh are deeply religious, and their feelings regarding faith are highly sensitive. Some groups have repeatedly tried to exploit this noble characteristic to stir instability,” he said.
Maulana Yunus Ahmad pointed to the recent controversy involving Baul singer Abul Sarkar, who reportedly made derogatory remarks about Almighty Allah, saying the incident has been deliberately politicised by certain groups to advance their own interests. “This is part of a deeper conspiracy to weaken our social and political unity during a critical time in the nation. Those attempting to create unrest must be brought under the law,” he added.

Commenting on the public reaction, he said the response to the baul controversy has been exaggerated.
“The focus has shifted from Abul Hossain’s indecent and offensive remarks to the public’s reaction. While freedom of speech is important, insulting someone or hurting religious sentiments is a punishable offense. Abul Hossain’s actions have provoked unrest. It is necessary to investigate whether those defending him have any hidden political agenda,” Maulana Yunus Ahmad said.
He also criticised attempts to blame ordinary citizens and alleged police harassment in connection with the incident.
“We must view every situation objectively, ensure justice without bias, and carefully consider who benefits from each action and reaction. In these critical times, everyone must act with caution and responsibility,” he urged.
