BNP on Saturday dismissed allegations of secret agreements with India as political propaganda, saying the claims have no factual basis.
The denial came at a press briefing at the party’s Gulshan office, where Election Steering Committee spokesperson Mahadi Amin responded to remarks by Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Amir Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher.
Taher had alleged, citing media reports, that the BNP chief had entered into three agreements with India to facilitate a return to power.
Mahadi Amin said the Jamaat leader failed to present any evidence in support of the claim, describing it as a political tactic aimed at creating controversy or spreading misinformation.
“We want to state clearly that what is being said about BNP’s agreements with India is completely propaganda,” he told reporters. He said BNP politics is firmly Bangladesh-centric and that under the leadership of Tarique Rahman the party places national interest, sovereignty and citizen empowerment above all else.
Mahadi Amin also referred to the party’s political legacy, recalling the role of Ziaur Rahman in resisting hegemonism and the stance of former prime minister Khaleda Zia against what he termed a subservient foreign policy.
He said the BNP continues to uphold a “Bangladesh First” approach under its current leadership.
Responding to a separate query, Mahadi Amin addressed reports that money is being demanded in the name of proposed Family Cards or Farmer Cards, calling such acts unwanted and unexpected.
He said any attempt to collect money using the name of the cards is aimed at creating controversy and urged people to remain vigilant.
