The Indian government has appointed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dinesh Trivedi as the country’s next High Commissioner to Bangladesh.
According to an announcement from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs today, Trivedi is expected to assume his new diplomatic role shortly. He will succeed Pranay Verma, a career diplomat who has been designated as India’s next ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
The appointment comes at a critical juncture as New Delhi and Dhaka work to revitalise bilateral relations.
Ties between the two neighbours experienced a period of strain during the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, which followed the collapse of the Awami League administration in August 2024.
However, diplomatic relations have shown signs of improvement since the new government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, took office earlier this year.
A prominent political figure, Trivedi has previously held several high-ranking positions in the Indian government during the UPA regime. His past experience includes serving as the Union Minister for Railways as well as the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.
Trivedi’s political career saw a significant shift in 2021; he resigned from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on 12 February 2021, and subsequently joined BJP on 6 March 2021.
