The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) on Saturday honoured engineer-members of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad at a reception marking the closing ceremony of its 78th founding anniversary, also observed as Engineers Day, in Ramna, Dhaka.
Independence Award 2026 recipient Mohammad Abdul Baki was also felicitated for his contributions to research and training.
Engineer-MPs recognised at the event included Md Ashraf Uddin (Bakul), MP for Narsingdi-5; Moinul Islam Khan, MP for Manikganj-2; and reserved-seat MPs Sanzida Islam (Tuli), Mahbuba Hakim Camelia and Mardia Momtaz. They were presented with honorary crests and ceremonial shawls.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, MP, attending as chief guest, said IEB had played a “significant role” in Bangladesh’s development journey through professional contribution of engineers.
He said development must go beyond infrastructure, stressing integrity, accountability and planning alongside technical expertise. Engineers, he added, had historically contributed to democratic movements and national causes.
Referring to governance challenges in development projects, he called for greater professionalism and ethical practice to address inefficiencies and irregularities.
IEB honorary general secretary Md Sabbir Mostafa Khan said the month-long anniversary programme included seminars and discussions on national development, engineering education and technology, with recommendations to be forwarded to relevant ministries.
IEB president and RAJUK chairman Mohammad Riazul Islam (Riju) said the organisation continued to support state-building through professional capacity development, bringing engineers together beyond political affiliation.
Senior office bearers including vice-presidents and assistant general secretaries also attended the event. The programme was moderated by KM Asaduzzaman, while Niaz Uddin Bhuiyan delivered the vote of thanks.
