A joint initiative by the Lions Club of Chittagong Dynamic City and the Salma Adil Foundation has completed free cataract surgeries for 54 patients in Chattogram.
The surgeries were conducted in two phases at the Chattagram Lions Charitable Eye Hospital and Institute of Ophthalmology, according to a press release issued on Saturday.
As part of post-operative care, each patient was provided with a one-month supply of essential medication and corrective eyeglasses free of cost. All patients are reported to be in stable condition and recovering well.
The initiative followed a large-scale eye medical camp held on 18 April at Sharifunnessa-Naziruddin High School in Fatehnagar, Chandanaish, where around 650 local residents received primary eye care services.
During the screening, 85 patients were identified with cataract-related complications requiring surgical intervention. Of them, 54 patients were admitted to the hospital on May 9 for the first phase of surgeries performed by specialist ophthalmologists.
The organisers said the remaining identified patients will be treated in subsequent phases under the ongoing programme.
