Questions have been raised over the responsibility of the Jnucsu election commission and personal information security after university ID cards linked to a panel found at a polling centre.
The allegations were made at a press conference held beneath the Bhasha Shaheed Rafiq Bhaban on Tuesday afternoon by Professor Mohammad Bilal Hossain, central general secretary of the University Teachers’ Link, after monitoring the election process.
He said at one polling centre, a book was found in the possession of a candidate’s agent containing students’ university ID card information along with panel identification details.
After the matter was immediately brought to the attention, the materials were seized.
“These ID cards were supposed to remain under the custody of the Jnucsu election commission. How did they go outside its control and end up at a polling centre – this is our primary question,” Bilal Hossain said.
According to him, the presence of materials containing personal data at polling centres could influence voters and undermine the principle of a level playing field in the Jnucsu election. He called for the identification of those involved and swift action against them.
Bilal Hossain further stressed that the long-cherished Jnucsu election, achieved through years of student movements, must not be allowed to become controversial, and urged the university’s election commission and administration to act with neutrality and responsibility.
He said they had been observing the Jnucsu election situation by visiting various polling centres since 9am. Although voter turnout was relatively low in the morning due to cold weather, it increased as the day progressed, with long queues seen at most centres.
