A team of students from Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) has won the gold medal in the Blue Tech category at the Fibonacci International Robot Olympiad 2026 National Round, securing a place to represent Bangladesh at the international stage in Rome, Italy, in November.
The team, competing as “BUBT-TORI”, won the award for Project TORI, a low-cost semi-autonomous underwater vehicle developed through the BUBT Innovation Hub, said a press release.
Led by Md Sajidul Islam Samin, the team developed TORI Lo-sAUV, an affordable underwater vehicle designed for shallow-water inspection and research. The project aims to make underwater robotics more accessible by reducing the high costs associated with conventional commercial and research-grade underwater vehicles.
The vehicle maintains continuous communication with a Ground Control Station, allowing operators to monitor and control its operations, while onboard autonomous systems manage safety features, sensing and obstacle avoidance.
The research and development team behind the project included Abdur Rahman Sifat, Mosharef Hossain and Amir Hamza. Fazla Rabbi managed media and communication activities, while Tanvir Ahmed Sifat worked as video editor. Executive Member Md Aslam Hossain was also part of the team.
The national round of the Fibonacci International Robot Olympiad 2026 was held on 4 September at United International University (UIU) in Dhaka.
The event was attended by Alexandra A Khlevnoy, Director of the Russian House in Dhaka and First Secretary at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bangladesh, Nurul Haque Nur, Member of Parliament and State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and Muhammed Mehdi Hasan Chowdhury, Head of Sales at BSRM Steels and BSRM Group of Companies.
BUBT authorities said the achievement reflects the innovative capabilities of its students and expressed hope for further success at national and international competitions.
