The High Court has rejected the candidacy of BNP leader Manjurul Ahsan Munshi, effectively barring him from contesting the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.
The relevant bench of the High Court delivered the order on Wednesday following a hearing.
According to lawyers, the court’s decision has, for the time being, closed the path for the candidate to contest the polls in this constituency.
Previously, Munshi had filed a writ petition on Monday challenging the Election Commission’s (EC) decision and hoping for his nomination to be restored.
The dispute began during the nomination scrutiny phase, when the returning officer initially declared Munshi’s nomination valid.
However, Hasnat Abdullah, the National Citizen Party (NCP) candidate for the same constituency, appealed to the EC against that decision.
Abdullah’s appeal alleged that the BNP candidate was a loan defaulter and had concealed this information when filing his nomination papers.
Following a hearing at the Election Bhaban in Agargaon on Saturday, the commission found the allegations to be accurate and cancelled the returning officer’s decision, declaring the nomination invalid.
