Italy has expressed its unwavering support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition and the July Charter, a framework designed to implement extensive reforms for the nation’s democratic revival.
During a courtesy call at the State Guest House Jamuna on Tuesday, the Italian Undersecretary for Defence, Matteo Perego di Cremnago, conveyed these sentiments to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
The two leaders engaged in extensive discussions regarding trade, defence cooperation, and migration, alongside preparations for the referendum and general elections scheduled for 12 February.
Perego lauded the July Charter and reaffirmed Rome’s commitment to assisting Bangladesh through its upcoming electoral process.
Highlighting the Indo-Pacific as the new global centre of gravity, the visiting minister stated that Italy is keen to bolster ties with Bangladesh’s expanding economy to establish a shared future path.
While noting the successful integration of the Bangladeshi community in Italy, Perego raised concerns regarding illegal migration via the Mediterranean route.
In response, Yunus highlighted his long-standing connection with Italy, mentioning his role in designing the Milano–Cortina Winter Olympics as a social business initiative prior to becoming the interim leader. He advocated for expanded legal migration to countries with ageing populations, such as Italy and Japan.
The chief adviser guaranteed a free, fair, and transparent election on 12 February, welcoming the large team of European Union election observers.
Yunus predicted a strong voter turnout, particularly among the youth who were disenfranchised during the 16-year tenure of the previous fascist autocratic regime.
Furthermore, he invited Italian investment and sought support for the country’s democratic transition and defence cooperation.
The meeting was also attended by National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman, SDG Coordinator Lamiya Morshed, and Italian Ambassador Antonio Alessandro.
