The High Court on Monday granted eight weeks of anticipatory bail to Gazi Nazrul Islam, the expelled Member of Parliament (MP) from Satkhira-4 constituency, in an attempted murder case filed with Pallabi Police Station in Dhaka.
A High Court bench comprising Justice K M Zahid Sarwar and Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order. Advocate SM Shahjahan represented the petitioner in court.
The case was filed on 21 July by Obaidur Rahman, personal driver of the parliamentarian. In addition to Gazi Nazrul Islam, four of his associates Aminur Rahman, Masum Billah, Mostasim Billah, and Rakibul Hasan were also accused in the case.
Obaidur Rahman alleged that he was beaten for protesting against Nazrul’s “immoral relationship.” He further said that Nazrul assaulted him under the suspicion that he was involved in leaking a video.
Gazi Nazrul Islam was elected as a Member of Parliament from Satkhira-4 constituency in the 13th parliamentary election as a nominee of Jamaat-e-Islami.
On 20 July, several videos capturing personal moments of him with a young woman, showing them in close intimacy, went viral on social media. On 22 July, Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam for “moral turpitude.”
