The controversy surrounding Bangladesh’s decision not to travel to India for the T20 World Cup has intensified following remarks by a Bangladesh Cricket Board director. Former cricketer and Miles band member Hamin Ahmed has strongly criticised the comments, which targeted former national captain Tamim Iqbal.
The issue resurfaced last Thursday after Tamim shared his views on Bangladesh’s future in T20 cricket at a public event. He said the board should make decisions based on Bangladesh’s standing in world cricket. Soon after, BCB director M Nazmul Islam shared a photocard of Tamim’s remarks on social media. In a post shared with limited visibility, he referred to Tamim as an “Indian agent”, sparking widespread backlash once the comment became public.
Hamin Ahmed responded on Facebook, questioning how a BCB director could publicly insult one of the country’s most respected cricketers. He described the remark as indecent and unacceptable, particularly given the responsibility of the director’s position.
Hamin, himself a former national cricketer, said the statement was shameful and had damaged the image of Bangladesh cricket. He called on the BCB to remove the director from his post and issue a public apology to Tamim Iqbal, fellow cricketers and fans.
Several national team players have since expressed support for Tamim on social media. Those backing him include spinner Taijul Islam, former captain Mominul Haque and fast bowler Taskin Ahmed. The cricketers’ organisation QAWB has also submitted a formal protest letter to the BCB.
