Faisal Rubel Ahmed, a close associate of the prime accused in the murder case of Inqilab Moncho convener Sharif Osman Hadi, has been placed on a fresh three-day remand.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order on Wednesday. The Investigating Officer (IO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abdur Kadir Bhuiyan of the CID (Dhaka Metro East), had initially prayed for a seven-day remand.
The IO informed the court that Rubel provided significant information during a previous six-day remand, which now requires further verification.
Prosecution officer SI Md Roknuzzaman confirmed the court’s decision. During the hearing, Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman argued in favour of the remand, stating that the murder of Hadi was a premeditated act rather than a sudden incident.
He further noted that two mobile phones recovered from the accused have been sent for forensic analysis, and the resulting reports are expected to provide more details crucial for ensuring justice.
Representing himself without a lawyer, the accused, Rubel, claimed he was a victim of mistaken identity. He told the court that he is a jobholder residing in Adabar and is not the “Kamruzzaman Rubel” allegedly involved in the killing.
However, the IO refuted these claims, asserting that the accused is indeed the Rubel named in the case and is a known associate of the main suspect, Faisal Karim Masud (also identified as Karim Masud alias Rahul).
The IO added that Rubel had admitted to this association during his earlier six-day remand. The court subsequently clarified that he was not being held as the other individual he mentioned before granting the three-day remand.
Rubel was arrested by the CID, with assistance from the DB police, from the Ati Noyabazar area of South Keraniganj at midnight on 21 January. Following his arrest, the court granted an initial six-day remand on January 22.
