Police arrested six leaders and activists of the banned Awami League (AL) from a restaurant in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on Friday night, alleging that they had gathered there for a secret meeting.
Police said they raided the restaurant after receiving information that several AL leaders and activists had assembled there.
The six were identified as Md Mehedi Masud Chowdhury, SM Rezwan Habib Alif, Md Nannu Mia, Md Aminur Rahman, Sajal Ahmed and Md Ibrahim Hossain.
The detainees were sent to jail on Saturday afternoon, police said.
Muklesur Rahman, inspector (investigation) of Gulshan Police Station, confirmed the arrests to TIMES of Bangladesh.
He said police conducted the raid based on information that several leaders and activists of the banned AL had gathered for a secret meeting.
“We are checking whether any previous cases have been filed against them,” he said.
Police said legal proceedings against the six are underway.
