Bongo is gearing up to premiere its latest original series ‘Girgiti’ on October 16, a dark, suspense-filled crime thriller that delves deep into the seedy underbelly of the fictional town Biralpur, where power, drugs and murder collide.
Once a lively and prosperous city, Biralpur now rots under the weight of corruption and greed. When three men employed by an influential businessman, Chowdhury, are found brutally murdered, Detective Maruf Zaman is tasked with unraveling the case. But the investigation takes a shocking twist when another murder occurs, this time inside the police station itself. What follows is a tense, mind-bending chase that forces Maruf to question not only those around him but his own sense of trust and morality.
The five-episode series is based on a story by Rahat Mehedi Haque, with screenplay by Jyotirmoy Roy and direction by Lashkar Niaz Mahmud. Irfan Sajjad leads the cast as the determined yet conflicted Maruf Zaman, alongside Shatabdi Wadud, Nader Chowdhury, Ashish Khandakar, Mohana Meem, Golam Farida Chhanda, Milon Bhattacharya and Sharif Siraj.
Director Lashkar Niaz Mahmud describes Girgiti as an attempt to blend realism with psychological depth. “Most murder mysteries follow a predictable path; a crime, an investigation, a detective. From Holmes to Feluda, that formula has stood the test of time. But with Girgiti, we wanted to break convention through mood, texture, and authenticity,” he explained.
“Our characters are not archetypes of good or evil; they’re flawed, human and believable. And we’ve brought in over a dozen new faces, all of whom bring raw energy to the screen.”
Post-production took place at SK Studio in India, with acclaimed editor Subhajit Singha shaping the final cut.
For lead actor Irfan Sajjad, the title Girgiti, meaning chameleon, captures the essence of the story. “A chameleon changes its colours to survive,” he said.
“Our series mirrors that idea: it’s unpredictable, full of psychological turns and steeped in emotion. Beneath the crime and suspense lies a deeper exploration of how people adapt, deceive and transform in the face of darkness.”
