The Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) Teachers’ Association has issued a statement urging the removal of the current pro-vice chancellor, Professor Moinul Hossain, and the appointment of a new, qualified professor who aligns with the university’s nationalist ideals.
The association said that following the interim government’s appointment of Moinul Hossain without proper scrutiny in August 2024, they believe that the democratic government should now make the appointment of a new pro-vice chancellor from the university’s pool of senior and qualified professors.
Speaking at the event, the association called for the prioritisation of internal candidates with extensive experience and contributions to the university’s development. “If internal candidates are considered for these critical administrative roles, it will send a positive message within the teaching community,” said the statement.
The association also emphasized that the decision should be based on merit, transparency, and the university’s long-term academic and administrative stability.
Professor Abdul Latif Masum, Vice-Chairman of the Bangladesh Students Welfare Trust, presided over the event, with special guests including Minister of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Haque.
Professor Md Moinuddin Khan, Chairman of Bangladesh Students Welfare Trust and former Advisor to the Caretaker Government, and Md Sabur Khan, Chairman of Daffodil International University, were also present.
The university, which has earned notable recognition in global rankings, has consistently led agricultural research and development in Bangladesh. The teachers’ association also highlighted the university’s significant contribution to the agricultural sector, having developed 97 high-yielding crop varieties and 16 innovative technologies to date.
In their press statement, the Teachers’ Association stressed that the integrity of the university must be maintained, calling for the removal of Moinul Hossain, an appointment made by the previous interim government, and urging the current government to appoint a leader in line with the university’s values and its commitment to the nation’s development. The association further expressed its commitment to supporting the government’s agriculture-friendly initiatives.
