Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) observed the 56th Independence and National Day of Bangladesh on 26 March 2026 with flag‑hoisting, a rally, tributes to Liberation War martyrs and a programme of speeches and prayers.
The day’s programme began at 7am with the hoisting of the national flag at the historic 36 July Square on the GAU campus, followed by a disciplined march past that filled the university with patriotism and pride.
At 10am a colourful rally led by Vice‑Chancellor Professor GKM Mustafizur Rahman paraded across campus and concluded at the university’s Central Shaheed Minar. After the rally, the Vice‑Chancellor laid a wreath at the Shaheed Minar in tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War. Wreaths were later placed by the Teachers’ Association, teachers and students at the university’s primary and high schools, provosts and students of residential halls, and university officers, staff and workers.
A brief discussion on the significance of Independence Day followed, moderated by Professor Mohammad Sharif Raihan, Director of Students’ Welfare. Speakers included Vice‑Chancellor Professor GKM Mustafizur Rahman; Pro‑Vice‑Chancellor Professor M Moynul Haque; Treasurer Professor Md Safiul Islam Afrad; President of the Teachers’ Association Professor Nasrin Akter Ivy; General Secretary Professor Mohammad Saiful Alam; and Registrar Md Abdullah Mridha.
In his address, the Vice‑Chancellor paid tribute to Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, regarded as the proclaimer of Bangladesh’s independence and a pioneer of multi‑party democracy. He recalled the sacrifices of the Liberation War, noting that the nation achieved independence through the ultimate sacrifice of three million martyrs and the honour of two hundred thousand women. He also highlighted GAU’s achievements in education and research both nationally and internationally and reiterated the university’s commitment to strengthening these accomplishments for the nation’s welfare.
As part of the programme, a special prayer was offered after Zuhr at the university’s central mosque, seeking eternal peace for the souls of Liberation War martyrs and prosperity for the country.
