Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hasan Mahmud has informed the Jatiya Sangsad that the country’s remaining gas reserves will be able to sustain supply for approximately 12 years.
The minister provided this information while responding to a question from Member of Parliament for Bogra-4 Md Mosharraf Hossain.
According to the minister, the current total extractable gas reserve in the country is 29.74 trillion cubic feet (TCF). Of this amount, 22.11 TCF of gas was extracted by December 2025, leaving the remaining reserve at 7.63 TCF as of 1 January 2026.
Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud explained that if no new gas fields are discovered and the gas supply continues at the current rate of approximately 1,700 million cubic feet per day, the remaining 7.63 TCF can be supplied for an estimated 12 years.
Extraction and drilling plans
Highlighting ongoing gas exploration activities, the minister noted that under Petrobangla’s plan to drill and perform workovers on 50 to 100 wells, activities for 26 wells have been completed to date. Operations for the remaining wells are currently at various stages of implementation.
Regarding seismic surveys, BAPEX is currently processing 2D seismic data collected from approximately 3,600 line kilometres in Blocks 7 and 9. Meanwhile, BGFCL is set to begin 3D seismic data acquisition over an area of 1,450 square kilometres in Habiganj, Bakhrabad, and Meghna.
Future seismic surveys
Several plans for 3D seismic surveys have been adopted to bolster exploration. These include BAPEX conducting surveys across 660 square kilometres in Charfasson, Bhola, and 650 square kilometres in Jamalpur.
Additionally, BGFCL is scheduled to survey 632 square kilometres in areas adjacent to Titas, Habiganj, and Narsingdi.
SGFL has also formulated plans for 3D seismic surveys covering 882 square kilometres across the Lamigaon, Lalabazar, Gowainghat, Kailashtila South, and Fenchuganj West structures.
