A welder was killed and another was injured on Saturday afternoon in a gas cylinder explosion while cutting an old vehicle oil tank at Crown Cement Factory in Bandar area of Narayanganj.
The deceased was identified as Sheikh Rafiq, 60, whose home is in Ramu Police Station area of Cox’s Bazar. The injured worker is Mohibul, 48. Both men were employed as welding mechanics at the factory.
The factory’s Admin Executive, Mostafizur Rahman, said the accident occurred at around 3.30pm when the workers were cutting an old vehicle oil tank using a gas torch. Suddenly, the gas cylinder exploded with a loud noise.
The force of the explosion left Rafiq with severe abdominal injuries, whilst Mohibul sustained injuries to his head and body. Both workers were rescued in a critical condition and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Upon arrival, the attending physician declared Rafiq dead at around 5pm, while Mohibul remains undergoing treatment in the emergency department.
Inspector Md Faruk, In-charge of Dhaka Medical College Police Camp, confirmed the death and said Bandar Police Station has been informed of the incident. The body of the deceased is currently kept in the emergency department morgue of the hospital.
