Ahmed Shaheen has joined Mercantile Bank PLC as additional managing director as the lender pursues institutional modernisation, digital transformation and stronger risk governance.

Shaheen previously served as additional managing director of Eastern Bank PLC and brings more than 33 years of experience in Bangladesh’s banking industry, Mercantile Bank said in a press release on Sunday.

He began his banking career in late 1992 as a probationary officer at IFIC Bank and has worked across international banking, corporate relationship units and structured finance.

Shaheen also served as deputy managing director and chief business officer of Prime Bank Limited from 2015 to 2016.

A University of Dhaka graduate, Shaheen completed his postgraduate studies at American International University-Bangladesh.

He holds the Certified Documentary Credit Specialist certification from the Institute of Financial Services, UK, and is also a certified graduate in Finance of International Trade.

Shaheen is a member of the Banking Commission of ICC Bangladesh, according to the release.

During his banking career, he has been involved in product innovation and changes in the industry, particularly in trade finance.

Mercantile Bank said it expects Shaheen’s executive leadership to help expand its sustainable finance portfolio, improve asset quality and introduce new financial services for corporate and retail customers as the bank advances its modernisation, digital transformation and risk-governance initiatives.
