Lionel Messi and Nicolas Otamendi combined for an emotional opening goal as Argentina took the lead against Benin at the Estadio Monumental.
The breakthrough came in the 49th minute. Messi curled the ball into the area from the left corner and Otamendi finished it into the net.
It was a fitting moment for two players making their final appearances for Argentina.
Messi marked his farewell with the assist, while Otamendi found the net in his last international match.
The emotion continued only three minutes later.
Otamendi was substituted in the 52nd minute and received a warm farewell from the stadium. His teammates gathered around him as he left the pitch, with Messi among those who embraced the veteran defender.
Supporters rose to applaud Otamendi, with loud cheers ringing around the Monumental as he made his way off the field.
After a goalless first half, the two departing Argentina greats had combined to finally break Benin’s resistance.
