Despite government directives to shutter shopping malls by 6pm to conserve energy, several establishments in Gaibandha town have been observed disregarding the mandate.
The government recently implemented a series of austerity measures to address an energy crisis exacerbated by the ongoing war in the Middle East. Under these regulations, public and private offices are required to operate from 9am to 4pm, while all markets and shopping malls must close no later than 6pm.
However, the reality on the ground reflects a lack of compliance. On Friday, 3 April, an on-site inspection conducted at approximately 8pm revealed that the majority of shops remained open, with only a few adhering to the stipulated closing time. Major establishments, including Youngzone, Richman, Park View Super Market, Salimar Market, and various footwear and clothing stores, were found to be fully operational two hours past the deadline.
Naim, a salesperson at Youngzone, stated that he was in charge while the manager was in Dhaka and claimed he had received no formal notification regarding the 6:00 pm closure. Although he acknowledged seeing the news on Facebook, he was uncertain if a formal gazette had been issued.
Similarly, staff at the neighbouring Richman showroom indicated they were awaiting instructions from their Dhaka head office following an online meeting.
At Park View Super Market, Alamgir Mia, the business manager of Akash Bag Ghar, expressed a lack of awareness concerning the emergency decision. He argued that if such a critical mandate were in place, the District Administration should have conducted public announcements via “miking”. He added that they would comply only if all other traders did the same. Grocery stores and other retail outlets were also seen continuing their business as usual.
Addressing the defiance, Gaibandha Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Masudur Rahman Molla emphasised that government directives must be followed by everyone. He questioned the necessity for new local notifications for a national mandate and warned that legal action will be taken against those who violate the government orders.
