The seven firearms stolen from the vault of import section of the cargo complex at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport have not yet been recovered.
Despite continuous investigation, police and intelligence agencies have made little progress in tracing the weapons. The airport officials said that CCTV footage is being reviewed as part of the ongoing probe.
According to sources at the airport, the firearms were stolen from the vault of the strong room, which had remained intact despite the devastating fire that broke out at the complex on 18 October.
The theft came to light last Sunday afternoon, 14 days after the incident, during a routine inspection of the strong room. US-made M4 carbines and Brazil-made Taurus pistols are among the weapons.
However, the exact number of each type of arms missing has not yet been confirmed. The revelation of the theft from a secured vault has caused a stir at the airport.
Following the incident, the Airport Police Station filed a general diary (GD) and notified the Police Headquarters.
Confirming the matter on Tuesday morning, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of DMP’s Uttara Division Mahidul Islam said a GD was lodged in this connection, and it mentioned that several firearms were missing.
A massive fire broke out at Shahjalal Airport’s import cargo complex around noon on 18 October, burning for nearly 17 hours and destroying a large portion of imported goods. Traders estimated the losses at around Tk 12,000 crore.
