The Fast & Furious franchise is shifting gears for television, with Peacock giving the long-running action series its first live-action TV adaptation. The untitled series is targeting a 2028 premiere.

According to Deadline, the series will come from Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman, who will write the pilot and serve as co-showrunners. Vin Diesel, who plays Dominic Toretto in the film franchise, will executive produce the project.

The series was among several projects Diesel announced during NBCUniversal’s Upfront event in New York in May. He said fans had wanted the franchise to expand its legacy characters and their stories, adding that there had been a desire to move into television for years.

“As you all know, we are very precious about these movies but over the last decade, we’ve realized that the fans have wanted more, they wanted us to expand the legacy characters, their stories,” Diesel said at the event. “And for the last decade, the desire has been for us to enter the TV space.”

Diesel said he became comfortable with the move after Universal Studios chief Donna Langley took oversight of NBCUniversal’s television operation last year.

“That’s when I knew that the integrity of the characters, the international appeal, what makes us all feel like family will be protected in the TV space,” he said.

The new series comes from Universal Television. Daniels and Coleman will also executive produce alongside Diesel, One Race’s Sam Vincent, Original Film’s Neal H Moritz and Pavun Shetty, as well as Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan.

Daniels recently served as an executive producer on Peacock’s PONIES. His other credits include Shades of Blue, Sons of Anarchy and NBC’s upcoming The Rockford Files reboot. Coleman has executive produced 9-1-1: Lone Star and also worked on Shades of Blue.

At the May Upfront event, Diesel also revealed that three other Fast & Furious TV projects were in development. One comes from The Endgame’s Nick Wootton and House of the Dragon’s Charmaine DeGraté. The other two come from Griselda showrunner Ingrid Escajeda and Lucifer showrunner Joe Henderson. The three projects remain separate from the series now ordered by Peacock.

The television expansion comes as NBCUniversal celebrates the 25th anniversary of the franchise. The series began with The Fast and the Furious in 2001, starring Diesel as Dominic Toretto alongside Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner, Jordana Brewster as Mia and Michelle Rodriguez as Letty.

Meanwhile, Fast Forever, the final film in the franchise, is scheduled for release on 17 March 2028.
