BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that law enforcement and punitive measures alone cannot eliminate drug abuse, stressing the need for a nationwide social movement involving all sections of society.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Tuesday morning after attending an anti-drug awareness meeting at the conference room of the Thakurgaon deputy commissioner’s office.
“We have launched an anti-drug campaign that aims to engage everyone,” Fakhrul said.
The minister stated government institutions, educational establishments, and social and political organisations must work together to build a united social movement against drugs, adding that there is no alternative to such a collective effort.
Fakhrul said legal measures remain part of the government’s strategy, but the desired results would come through broader social initiatives.
He also urged people from all walks of life to actively campaign against drugs, describing them as a “detrimental force”.
The meeting was attended by Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Rafiqul Haque, Superintendent of Police Belal Hossain, Thakurgaon District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, and officials from various government departments.
