Argentina forward Jose Manuel Lopez wants another chance to face Spain after the Albiceleste’s FIFA World Cup final defeat, with the Palmeiras striker hoping the postponed Finalissima eventually goes ahead.
Lopez spoke after receiving a tribute in his hometown of Lanus following Argentina’s return from the World Cup. The 25-year-old attended Lanus’ 1-0 Clausura victory over San Lorenzo as a special guest before sharing his thoughts with TyC Sports’ Paso a Paso.
The Finalissima between Argentina and Spain was originally scheduled for Qatar but was postponed because of conflict in the Middle East. Lopez said he would welcome another meeting with the European champions.
“Do I want to play Spain again? Of course. We always want to play against the best. That’s what it’s all about.”
The forward has already turned his attention to Argentina’s next challenge.
“We have a new challenge ahead. The Copa America is coming, so we have to start preparing now.”
Lopez also reflected on his World Cup journey and what representing Argentina means to him.
“Being part of this team is incredible. It is the biggest dream of my life. Representing this team gives me enormous joy. What we have achieved is something I never imagined, even in my dreams. Helping the team and contributing is a wonderful feeling.”
He thanked supporters in Lanus for the reception they gave him after the tournament.
“Coming home and receiving so much affection from the people of Lanus is truly incredible. They will always be in my heart. Experiencing this here is very special, and it was even better because the team won.”
Lopez also dismissed speculation surrounding Argentina’s World Cup final defeat.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t achieve our objective. We gave everything until the end, but it wasn’t meant to be. There is nothing unusual about it. Thinking otherwise is crazy. If God wills it, we will reach another final and fight for the title again.”
Lopez featured in two World Cup matches. He came off the bench against Jordan in the group stage and set up Julian Alvarez’s extra-time winner against Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
