BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that the government’s move to hastily pass the new Police Commission ordnance and NGO-related laws reflect “a different motive” that could obstruct the country’s democratic transition.
In a statement issued on Friday, the BNP secretary general said the party had learned from reliable sources that the current interim government was attempting to pass both laws in haste. One concerns amendments to the Police Commission law, while the other relates to NGOs.
Fakhrul said passing such important legislation before the national election, and without public mandate, would not be appropriate. He added that these laws should instead be formulated through debate and scrutiny in the next parliament.
He urged the government to refrain from taking such steps at this stage, warning that the move could hinder the path of democratic progress.
